Daily Update- October 28, 2020 Governor COVID Update, Vaccine Work Group

Today, Governor Sisolak gave a press conference to give an update about COVID-19 in Nevada. According to the White House Task Force, Nevada is in the red zone for cases, which is 101 or more new cases per 100,000 population, and is the 22nd highest in the US. 71% of counties in the state have moderate or high levels of community transmission, and 24% of those are deemed “red zone”. Red Zone counties are based on both the total number of known cases and a high test positivity rate (over 8%). Nevada’s test positivity rate is the 13th highest in the country. He urged Nevadans to fight “COVID fatigue” and to keep wearing their masks and observe social distancing.

State of Nevada COVID-19 Updates

Yesterday, Nevada, Washington and Oregon joined California’s COVID-19 Scientific Safety Review Workgroup which will independently review the safety and efficacy of any vaccine approved by the FDA for distribution. Last week, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the panel made up of nationally acclaimed scientists with expertise in immunization and public health.  This Western States Pact verification process will be happening in lockstep with the federal approval process. The goal is to not have this independent review cause any delay in getting a safe vaccine to the residents in these Western states. The full press release can be read HERE.
